I have been using the MFJ-1979 on my bicycle, back-pack and pedestrian mobile set up’s for over 5 years and as they are made from stainless steel they have not eroded or produced any rust which is perfect as I am exposed to salt water as I use them very close to the shore here in Blackpool England.
The 10 telescopic section antenna collapses down to less than 27 inches long and extended they are nearly 17ft long (resonant on 20M as full quarter wave), the antenna weighs around 500 grammes so its very light and I have found it to be very durable as I operate on the move on either the bike or the pedestrian mobile in very windy conditions on the promenade here in Blackpool England.
The beauty of these antennas is that you can operate them as a full quarter wave on 6, 10, 12, 15, 17 and 20 meters without a loading coil, just by adjusting the length to obtain resonance.
As there are no lossy coils they work exceptionally well and are very quick to deploy as they have a standard 3/8″ screw fitting.
I have used heat shrink at the bottom of my MFJ-1979 to prevent anyone from touching the antenna which is easy to apply.
I can highly recommend this antenna for portable and mobile use on every level.
